SEAFAIR

Early July thru Early August
Seattle's history has always been tied to the sea, from the whaling practices of the original coastal natives to the city's current status as a major international shipping port. It should be no surprise, then, that Seattle's most cherished tradition is SEAFAIR- the midsummer celebration of everything aquatic. Few events in the Northwest create as much palpable excitement as the arrival of the Blue Angels or the Hydroplane races on Lake Washington.

The month-long festival includes small boat races, a torchlight parade, a "Milk Carton Derby" (which features floating contraptions made by individuals and groups out of unusual materials), the Miss Seafair scholarship pageant, and of course the popular Chevrolet Cup Hydroplane races. Kids especially enjoy the landing of the SEAFAIR Pirates on Alki Beach! The performances by the Blue Angels have become a SEAFAIR staple, and likewise the arrival of the Navy Fleet is always highly anticipated. In addition, each individual neighborhood in the city and around the Sound holds its own celebration, parade or mini-festival.

SEAFAIR was begun in 1950 as a means of both drawing attention to the beauty of the Pacific Northwest and fostering civic pride. The idea was an immediate hit, and it has continued to grow in attendance and popularity for over 50 years.
